This guide covers agreeing how to split, recording shared spends, and settling up without a long chain of small payments.
Step 1: Agree what is shared
Decide which costs are shared: rent, electricity, internet, cooking gas, groceries, household supplies. Anything personal stays personal. Do this once, at the start, and write it down.
Step 2: Agree how to split each one
- Equal split works for rent, internet and utilities when everyone uses them about the same.
- By use suits groceries or a cook, when people eat differently.
- By income is sometimes used in families, where one earner covers more.
Step 3: Let whoever pays record it
The person who pays adds the expense at that moment, with the amount and what it was for. A single shared record beats trying to remember at month end.
Step 4: Settle up on a fixed date
Pick a day, such as the first of the month. On that day add up who paid what, work out who owes whom and settle. Doing it in one go is easier than small payments all month.
Step 5: Use the fewest payments
With three or four people, everyone paying everyone creates a tangle. Net it out so each person makes only the payments that are needed. If A owes B and B owes C, sometimes A can pay C directly.

Common questions
What is the fairest way to split rent?
Many flats split it equally. If rooms differ a lot in size, people often agree on different shares. What matters is that everyone agreed in advance.
How do I handle a flatmate who forgets to pay?
A shared record helps, because the amount owed is visible to everyone and not a matter of memory. Settle on a fixed date each month.
Do all my flatmates need the app?
Everyone who adds expenses to the group needs the app and joins with the invite code.
Can I share only some expenses?
Yes. Keep your personal spending in your own account and add only shared costs to the group.
Can I split expenses with family too?
Yes. Create a group for the family and everyone adds what they paid.
